Given its location, the project creates a contrast between the primary rectilinear buildings on the site and the new intervention. The museum’s fragmented curves reinforce the distinct character of its form: the elusive nature of the curves fold space in such a way as to make it difficult to distinguish inside from outside. Utilizing these installations as both interior and exterior conditions, this ambiguity plays with the observer’s perceptions of the urban condition. The elusive feeling of being outside even when one is enclosed and separated from the street was a primarily design criterion. The project was primarily designed around two of Auguste Rodin’s sculptural masterpieces – ‘The Burghers of Calais’ and ‘The Gates of Hell.’ This 25,000 square-foot museum contains galleries, offices and a bookstore. Conceived as a sister building to Morgan Stanley’s Headquarters at 1585 Broadway, the building was sold to Lehman Brothers after it was completed in the fall of 2001. The project was co-developed by Morgan Stanley and the Rockefeller Group that holds the lease on the 65,000 square-foot property. The project went through a rigorous Urban Land Use Review Process (ULURP). The design team worked closely with Community Board 5 and the New York City Planning Department to satisfy the complex zoning and design requirements for the last piece of Rockefeller Center. The 15,000 square feet of required signage was integrated into the architecture of the building. A new type of LED signage that is not ‘commercial,’ but rather site-specific, was created in collaboration with Imaginary Forces. Lehman Brothers Headquarters won the 2001 Construction News Award. Only blocks away from the beach, the design expresses the contextual dialog between the ocean and the adjacent commuter train station. A field of 7,000 reflective, movable 10” round stainless steel discs animates the façade as it responds to the naturally undulating ocean breeze. A new corner entrance is an urban response to the future commuter train station across the intersection. The building will be flexible enough to accommodate the expansion of Indiana University / Purdue University Columbus, Purdue School of Technology Columbus, and Ivy Tech State College Columbus. The Center’s location between existing buildings serves to bridge the physical and psychological gap between institutions. An enclosed pathway and main gathering spaces at either end further encourages this flow. Wired lounges punctuate the corridor to facilitate interaction. Stairs rise from these areas to high-tech education spaces that are interspersed with counseling and assessment services. This 120,000 square meter 45 floor office tower and luxury shopping center, developed by Tianjin Real Estate Development & Management Group, LTD, will utilize the most advanced sustainable and biophilic design strategies and technologies to reconnect people with nature. Blue Diamond Tower is inspired by the form and growth of bamboo forests. Blue Diamond generates 20% of its clean energy on site-through a combination of hydrogen fuel cells, solar panels, and wind turbines while simultaneously conserving 20% of the energy used by similar fully occupied mixed-use tower. Once completed, Blue Diamond will be one of the most advanced sustainable commercial buildings in China. We have completely transformed the mall into a vibrant destination that enhances the world class shops and department stores that have long been the hallmark of the Galleria. One of the most prominent features is a new black stone runway that ramps through the exterior to the interior and diffuses into a distinctive pixilated floor pattern that reverberates throughout the mall. We have opened up sight lines by exposing and enhancing the sculptural beauty of the ceiling vaults, eliminated most the brick for a more elegant feel, and created a stronger connection throughout the mall with escalator reconfiguration- ultimately achieving the goal of giving the Glendale Galleria customer a new and improved shopping experience. This project includes a full interior renovation and residential conversion a restoration of the original façade, and a two story 22,500 square-foot penthouse addition. Issues of visibility and a sensitive relationship to the existing building were paramount. In order to yield spatial dominance to this historic landmark, the addition consists of a playful arrangement of glass volumes that appear and disappear above the existing parapet. These volumes are derived from interior spaces whose proportions shift according to the domestic events they afford. Our team restored and redesigned the store’s exterior to recapture its original grandeur and take full advantage of foot traffic along America’s top retailing block. The ornate “Memorial Entrance” on 34th Street was restored and reopened. Windows along Broadway, 34th Street and Seventh Avenue, which had been covered up over the years, were reopened. Windows on the mezzanine were also uncovered to allow more natural light into the building. Awnings and canopies reminiscent of the original building were added. The development’s project includes a $410 million, 1.5 million-square-foot expansion transforming the landmark Emporium building and the existing San Francisco Centre which includes a combined commercial venue, Bloomingdale’s, and additional mixed use programs. In addition, the center features 200 specialty stores and exclusive boutiques, fine dining, an international gourmet marketplace, first-class office space and a nine-screen Century Theaters multiplex. The project includes over ten million square feet of space, of which 80% is designated as office space, and the rest designed with residential, commercial and cultural programming in mind. A vast public plaza and park is formed around the connected former tower footprints by a protective ring of new towers. The inspiration for United Architects’ design was to create a living memorial that develops over time. The entire World Trade Center site, from the earth to the sky, becomes both a monument to the past and a vision for the future. The two inviolate footprints frame the view upward to the United Towers that enclose and protect the site as the towers come together to form a continuous ring at the 60th floor. The memorial experience continues into dedicated elevators that bring visitors up to a Sky Memorial at the top of tower one. The Sky Memorial, like the Victims’ Family Viewing Room, gives a view back down to the site from a great height. The structural concept of the building is both unique and representative of the strength these towers convey. The principal elements of each of the five towers are concrete cores. These 20-foot square cores are wrapped by habitable spaces whose diagonally braced skin strengthens each tower while freeing the interiors of intervening columns. This ‘tube-within-tube’ configuration establishes a new tower typology, capable of immense strength. When the five towers are conjoined, the individual structural strength of each freestanding tower is increased, thus creating a complex compositional structure able to withstand immense forces through mutual support. In addition, the triangulated structural skin which weaves about the building allow the wrapping tubes of space to grow and contract during the journey up and around the five core elements. The building’s roof acts as a road that allows the employee or visitor to drive directly to the closest access point needed. Moving walkways connect all sections of the building to minimize time spent in transit. The serpentine shaped strand loops at key nodes creating public centers that rise above the arid, desert-like landscape, thus generating a new building typology. A perforated metal and glass skin encloses the ultra-light, synthetic carbon-aluminum composite structure. The centerpieces of the memorial are a transparent glass outdoor room which is etched with the words of Dr. King, an existing elm tree, and stone seating area configured as a chapel. The design intent is to create a contemporary bold design for BHG that incorporates elongated pixelated glass that wraps the facade in a sleek geometric skin. The glass is illuminated from behind to produce a mysterious effect as the atmosphere transforms from day to night. The glass is illuminated from behind to produce a magical effect as the atmosphere transforms from day to night. The plaza is meticulously landscaped to provide plenty of trees and accessible green areas for people to relax, meet and shop.
